01 — The short answer
Can I buy PEP at a pharmacy? Not legally, no.
In Thailand, HIV PEP is a prescription-only medicine, so you can’t buy PEP at a pharmacy counter the way you would buy painkillers.
If you’re asking “can I buy PEP at a pharmacy” after a recent exposure, the good news is that the legal route is also quick. A doctor at a clinic or hospital assesses your risk, runs a baseline HIV test and hands you the medicine, often in a single visit. What matters most is time: PEP must start within 72 hours, ideally within 2 hours, and it’s taken for 28 days.
So rather than going from one drug store to the next, spend that time getting to a doctor. Below: why the rules exist, what can go wrong with shortcuts and the fastest safe route in Pattaya.

02 — The rules
Why PEP isn’t sold over the counter.
PEP is a combination of antiretroviral medicines, the same family of drugs used to treat HIV. In Thailand these are supplied through hospitals and registered clinics on a doctor’s prescription, not by a pharmacist on request. So if you’re wondering “can I get PEP over the counter”, the answer is no, and the same applies to PrEP.
The right PEP pill depends on your health, the type of exposure and quick checks that a counter sale skips. If you’d like the background first, see what HIV PEP is and how it works.
Pharmacy, clinic, hospital or online: how the routes compare
| Route | Prescription and tests | Speed and follow-up |
|---|---|---|
| High-street pharmacy | Not a legal source of PEP; no HIV test or doctor | Fast if a shop sells it, but no follow-up at all |
| Private HIV clinic | Doctor’s prescription, baseline HIV test and safety checks | Often same day; follow-up plan included |
| Hospital | Prescription and tests, sometimes via the emergency department | Can involve queues; follow-up varies |
| Online telemedicine with a licensed doctor | Prescription after a video call; lab test arranged | Depends on delivery and lab timing |

03 — What really happens
“But I heard a shop sold it to someone.“
You may read stories online of people who managed to buy PEP in Thailand at a drug store. A published study of generic HIV medicines in Thailand and Vietnam confirmed that it does happen: researchers were able to buy antiretrovirals from private pharmacies without a prescription, even though local rules restrict supply to hospitals and clinics.
That doesn’t make it a good idea. A shop that sells it informally won’t test you, won’t check which drugs suit you and won’t be there if something goes wrong on day five.
Local forum threads echo this: some visitors describe being handed tablets with no blood test and feeling unsure they had the right course.

04 — The visit
Why the doctor visit actually protects you.
Every step of a proper PEP visit has a clear medical reason, and none should delay your first dose for long.
UK guidance from BHIVA’s post-exposure prophylaxis guideline recommends a baseline HIV test, a kidney function check and a hepatitis B check for anyone starting PEP. It also advises giving the full course at the first appointment, because people who leave with only a few days of tablets are less likely to finish.
What happens at a proper PEP visit, and why it matters
| Step | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Risk assessment | Confirms PEP is worthwhile; some exposures don’t need it |
| Baseline HIV test | If HIV is already present, PEP alone could lead to drug resistance |
| Kidney function check | Some PEP medicines need adjusting if the kidneys aren’t working well |
| Hepatitis B check | Some PEP drugs also act on hepatitis B, so stopping them needs planning |
| Medicines review | Antacids, iron, calcium and some other drugs can interfere with PEP |
| Full 28-day course and follow-up plan | Makes finishing the course and later testing far more likely |
At our clinic this all happens in one confidential visit. You can read what happens at your PEP visit in Pattaya, step by step.

05 — Online
Buying PEP online: what’s safe and what isn’t.
Two very different things are sold as “PEP online”. One is proper telemedicine: a licensed Thai doctor speaks to you, arranges tests and prescribes. The other is a website or chat seller shipping pills to anyone who pays.
Online pill seller vs telemedicine doctor
| Question | Unverified online seller | Licensed telemedicine |
|---|---|---|
| Who decides the regimen? | Nobody; you pick from a list | A doctor, based on your history |
| Is the medicine genuine? | Unknown source and storage | Dispensed through a licensed supplier |
| HIV test before starting? | No | Yes, arranged with a lab or home kit |
| Follow-up testing? | Not offered | Planned from the start |
The main risks of grey-market pills:
- Wrong or incomplete regimen: PEP is usually three medicines, and a partial combination may not protect you.
- Fakes or poor storage: you can’t check what’s in the packet.
- No baseline HIV test: starting without knowing your status can cause problems later.
- Lost time: waiting for a parcel eats into the 72-hour window.

06 — Already started?
If you’ve already bought pills elsewhere.
People make fast decisions when they’re worried. If you’ve started tablets from a pharmacy or website, keep the packaging and don’t stop suddenly without advice.
Contact a doctor as soon as you can, ideally the same day. They can check what you’re taking, run the baseline tests you missed and switch you to a complete course if needed. You’ll also get a proper follow-up plan, which is the part informal sellers never provide.

07 — In Pattaya
The fastest safe route to PEP in Pattaya.
You don’t need to travel to Bangkok or hunt for a pharmacy. The quickest path is usually this:
- Message or call first. Tell us roughly when the exposure happened so we can give you the earliest slot. Call, LINE or WhatsApp us at any stage.
- Come in with just your phone. Don’t delay to gather documents.
- Private consultation and tests. A doctor assesses your risk and runs a baseline HIV test and the checks you need.
- First dose before you leave. You go home with the full 28-day course and clear instructions.
If you’re not sure how much time you have, check the 72-hour PEP window. For a broken or slipped condom, our guide on what to do if a condom breaks covers the first hour. If cost is on your mind, see PEP cost in Pattaya; we confirm the full price before you start.
08 — After the course
Finishing PEP and what comes next.
PEP greatly reduces the risk of HIV when it’s started early and taken every day for 28 days, but it isn’t a one-off tablet. The HIV i-Base guide to PEP explains that you wait several weeks after finishing the course, then test to confirm it worked.
Flying home before then? We give you a medical summary for your doctor there. If you expect to be at risk again, a daily or on-demand prevention plan may suit you better; read about PrEP in Pattaya or see our HIV prevention services.
Questions
Quick answers on buying PEP.
Written by the HIV PEP Pattaya team, based on BHIVA and HIV i-Base guidance. Last updated 29 September 2026.
Is PEP available over the counter in Thailand?
No. PEP is a prescription medicine supplied through hospitals and clinics. Some shops may sell antiretrovirals informally, but that skips the HIV test and safety checks you need.
Does PEP need a prescription?
Yes. A doctor needs to confirm PEP is right for your exposure, choose the regimen and check your HIV status first. At a clinic this can usually be done in one visit.
Can pharmacists prescribe PEP in Thailand?
Not in the usual high-street setting. PEP is started by a doctor at a hospital or clinic, where your baseline tests and follow-up can be arranged at the same time.
Is it safe to buy PEP online?
Only through a licensed telemedicine service where a doctor assesses you and arranges an HIV test. Buying pills from an unverified website risks fakes, the wrong combination and lost time.
How fast can I get PEP in Pattaya?
Often the same day. Message us with the time of the exposure and we’ll give you the earliest appointment, with your first dose before you leave. More timing answers are in our PEP questions and answers.
