01 — The short answer

Condom broke in Pattaya? Act within hours, not days.

If a condom broke in Pattaya, the most useful thing you can do is speak to a doctor about HIV PEP today, because it must start within 72 hours and works best within 2 hours.

PEP is a 28-day course of HIV medicine that greatly reduces the chance of infection after a possible exposure. It is not needed after every broken condom, and a doctor will tell you honestly if your risk is low. What matters is that you ask while the window is still open.

02 — Your window

How much time you have left.

Enter roughly when the condom broke and the dial shows the hours remaining. If you are unsure of the exact time, use your best guess and message us anyway.

PEP must be started within 72 hours of exposure. The sooner, the better.

Guidance only, not a diagnosis. If you are unsure, contact us straight away.

For a deeper look at why timing matters and what happens once the window has closed, see the 72-hour PEP window. The US health agency puts it simply: the CDC advises that every hour counts with PEP, and it names a broken condom as a typical reason to consider it.

03 — The plan

Your first 72 hours, step by step.

Work through these in order. Most people can do the first three within an hour of reading this.

  1. Stop and replace the condom if you are still together, then wash gently with plain water.
  2. Note the time the condom broke. The doctor will ask, and it decides your options.
  3. Contact a clinic now: call, LINE or WhatsApp us and say it is about PEP, so we can offer the earliest slot.
  4. Think about pregnancy. If either of you could get pregnant, sort out emergency contraception today.
  5. Start PEP if advised, after a baseline HIV test, and take it every day for 28 days.
  6. Book your tests for the weeks ahead, even if you feel completely well.

04 — Your risk

Condom broke: do I need PEP?

It depends on the kind of sex, whether fluids were exchanged and what you know about your partner’s HIV status. Receptive anal sex carries the highest risk, and oral sex a much lower one. A partner living with HIV who is on effective treatment with an undetectable viral load does not pass HIV on through sex.

So how do I know if I need PEP? You don’t have to decide alone. Use the table as a rough guide, then let a doctor look at your details. You can also read what HIV PEP is and how it works before your visit.

Which situations usually lead to PEP

SituationIs PEP usually considered?
Anal sex, partner’s status unknownYes, usually recommended
Vaginal sex, partner’s status unknownOften, after a doctor’s assessment
Partner has HIV, not on treatment or viral load unknownYes, usually recommended
Partner has HIV, undetectable on treatmentUsually not needed
Oral sex onlyRarely; ask if there was blood or sores
Condom broke after withdrawal, no fluid exchangeUsually not needed

If your situation isn’t listed, or you are simply not sure, message us. Our PEP questions and answers page also covers side effects, alcohol and missed doses.

05 — Pregnancy

Emergency contraception for the partner who can get pregnant.

PEP does not prevent pregnancy, so if a pregnancy is possible, emergency contraception is a separate, equally urgent step.

In Thailand, levonorgestrel morning-after pills are widely sold by pharmacists without a prescription. Other options may be harder to find locally, so ask a pharmacist or doctor what is available. The NHS guide to emergency contraception explains that the sooner you use it, the better it tends to work.

Ulipristal acetate pillWithin 120 hoursAsk a doctor; may not be stocked

06 — Testing

Testing at the right times.

A test the morning after a broken condom can’t show whether that encounter passed anything on. It shows your status before the exposure, which is exactly why a baseline HIV test comes before PEP. The results that answer your question arrive over the following weeks.

Which tests, and when

TestTimingPurpose
Baseline HIV testBefore starting PEPConfirms PEP is the right treatment
Chlamydia and gonorrhoeaAbout 2 weeks afterEarlier results can miss infection
SyphilisSeveral weeks afterBlood test needs time to turn positive
Follow-up HIV testsAround 6 weeks and 3 monthsConfirms your final result

We can arrange all of these as part of our HIV prevention services, or give you a written plan to test at home.

07 — Avoid these

What not to do in the first hours.

Panic pushes people towards a few common mistakes. Some of them cost precious time.

  • Waiting to see if symptoms appear. HIV often causes none early on, and by the time anything shows, PEP is no longer an option.
  • Douching or scrubbing. Harsh washing, alcohol or soap inside the body can irritate delicate tissue. Plain water on the outside is enough.
  • Self-medicating with unknown pills. PEP is prescription-only in Thailand and needs a test first. Read whether you can buy PEP at a pharmacy before trying.
  • Treating an early test as final. A negative result tomorrow reflects the past, not this exposure.

08 — People and plans

Talking to your partner, and flying home soon.

If you can, ask your partner calmly whether they have had a recent HIV test and whether they take PrEP or HIV treatment. Keep it practical and free of blame: you are both protecting your health. If they don’t know, or you can’t reach them, the doctor simply treats their status as unknown.

Leaving Thailand in a day or two is no reason to skip PEP after a condom broke. You take the full 28-day course with you, plus a medical summary for follow-up tests at home. Here is what happens at your PEP visit, from first message to first dose.

Wondering about price? Our guide to PEP cost in Pattaya sets out typical ranges, and we confirm the full price before you start. If broken condoms or condomless sex are likely again, ask about PrEP in Pattaya once your course ends.

Questions

Quick answers after a broken condom.

Written by the HIV PEP Pattaya team, based on NHS and CDC guidance. Last updated 29 September 2026.

What are the chances of HIV if a condom breaks?

For a single exposure the risk is usually low, but it is not zero and it varies a lot with the type of sex and your partner’s status. A doctor can weigh your situation in a few minutes, which is more reliable than numbers found online.

How soon should I take PEP after a condom broke?

As soon as possible: ideally within 2 hours and no later than 72 hours. Don’t wait for the morning if you can be seen sooner.

Should I get tested right away?

Yes, a baseline HIV test is part of starting PEP. It shows your status before the exposure, and follow-up tests over the next weeks give the answer for this encounter.

Can I get emergency contraception at a pharmacy in Thailand?

Levonorgestrel morning-after pills are sold at most Thai pharmacies without a prescription and should be taken within 72 hours, the sooner the better. Ask a doctor about other options if more time has passed.

What if I don’t know my partner’s HIV status?

That is very common and is exactly what PEP is for. The doctor will treat the status as unknown and advise you based on the kind of exposure. For fast help, visit our clinic for HIV PEP in Pattaya.
