Taking PrEP to Thailand: A Pre-Trip Guide

Taking PrEP to Thailand? When to start before you fly, how many tablets to pack, time zones, missed doses and topping up in Pattaya, all in one calm plan.

01 — The short answer

Plan it three weeks out, then enjoy the trip.

If you are taking PrEP to Thailand, start daily tablets about three weeks before you fly, pack up to 30 days’ supply in the original packs, and keep your usual dosing time once you land.

That simple plan covers the different lead-in advice, fits Thai import rules and leaves room for late flights. If you have never used PrEP, this guide shows what to sort before you leave and what to do if something slips on holiday. For how PrEP works, the tests involved and local prices, see our main guide to PrEP in Pattaya.

Short on time before your flight? You can also start or top up once you arrive, and we can help from the first message.

02 — Before you go

A calendar for your PrEP for Thailand trip.

Working backwards from your departure date takes the stress out of it.

Your PrEP travel timeline

WhenWhat to doWhy it matters
4–6 weeks beforeBook a PrEP or sexual health appointmentClinics can be busy; results take time
About 3 weeks beforeHIV test, then start daily tabletsCovers every type of sex by arrival
1 week beforeCollect supply, ask for a letter, set alarmsPaperwork and routine sorted early
Travel dayTablets in hand luggage, dose at usual timeBags get lost; routine keeps protection
In ThailandKeep your daily dose, carry condomsPrEP covers HIV, not other infections
After you returnKeep dosing as advised, then testProtection for your last days away

If your departure is only days away, taking PrEP before Thailand is still possible with a double starting dose. The next section explains the options.

03 — Lead-in time

When protection actually begins.

It depends on the guidance your doctor follows and the kind of sex you expect to have.

Updated UK guidance from July 2025 says anyone starting daily PrEP takes a double dose 2 to 24 hours before sex, then one tablet a day. This is summarised clearly in the I Want PrEP Now guide to taking PrEP. Other guidance, including US advice, suggests about 7 days of daily tablets before relying on PrEP for receptive anal sex and about 21 days for vaginal or front-hole sex.

Why three weeks is the safe travel rule

Starting roughly three weeks before you leave satisfies every version of the advice. It also lets any early stomach upset pass at home, not on a beach in Jomtien.

What about on-demand dosing?

The 2-1-1 schedule is an option for cisgender men who have sex with men, not for vaginal or front-hole sex or people with hepatitis B. Timing each encounter is harder with jet lag, so many travellers use daily tablets for the trip.

04 — Packing and customs

Bringing your tablets into Thailand.

PrEP is an ordinary prescription medicine, and you can carry a personal supply into Thailand.

Royal Thai Embassy guidance allows non-controlled medicines for personal use up to 30 days of prescribed use. They should be in the original labelled packs, with a prescription or a doctor’s letter. Special permits apply mainly to narcotic and psychotropic medicines, which PrEP is not, but check the embassy guidance before you fly.

  • Pack the tablets in hand luggage, split across two bags if you can.
  • Bring the letter in English, naming the medicine and daily dose.
  • Keep packs out of direct sun, hot cars and beach bags.
  • Add a few spare days for delays, while staying within 30 days.

Staying longer than a month? Bring 30 days and plan to top up locally.

05 — Your supply

Bring your own, or start here.

Both routes work; the right one depends on your timing and how long you are staying.

Many visitors arrive with a supply from home. For others, getting PrEP before Thailand is not practical, perhaps because home clinics have long waits, so they start after landing instead.

Whichever you choose, a negative HIV test comes first. Pharmacy tablets bought without one can mask an early infection and cause drug resistance, the same concern we explain for buying HIV medicines at a pharmacy.

06 — On holiday

Time zones, late nights and missed doses.

Thailand is 5 to 7 hours ahead of most of Europe, so pick a local time and stick to it.

On arrival, switch to your usual clock time in Thai time. The one gap during the flight will be shorter or longer than 24 hours, and that is fine for daily PrEP. A phone alarm labelled with something discreet helps.

If you forget a tablet

  • Less than 12 hours late: take it now, then carry on as normal.
  • More than 12 hours late: skip it and take the next one at the usual time.
  • Never take two to catch up on daily PrEP.

Big nights make missed doses more likely, so take your tablet with breakfast or before you go out.

07 — Plan B

If something goes wrong on holiday.

Most problems have a simple fix, and PEP is there if protection lapsed.

If you missed several days in a row and had condomless sex, PrEP may not have been at protective levels. PEP started within 72 hours can still help, so check the 72-hour PEP window and message us.

For step-by-step help, see what to do if a condom breaks or our guide to PEP for tourists in Thailand. Getting PEP in Pattaya usually takes one visit.

08 — Coming home

Stopping, testing and next steps.

Keep taking PrEP for a short time after your last sex in Thailand, then book your checks.

With daily PrEP, continue one tablet a day for 2 days after your last sex, or 7 days after vaginal or front-hole sex. On 2-1-1, finish the two single doses after the last encounter. If you have hepatitis B, speak to your doctor before stopping.

  • Have your routine HIV test, as you would every 3 months on PrEP.
  • Book an STI screen about two weeks after you get back, even without symptoms.
  • Tell your clinic if you missed doses or used PEP while away.

If you tested in Thailand, HIV testing in Pattaya explains what the results mean. Not sure which medicine fits future trips? Compare PEP vs PrEP side by side.

Questions

Taking PrEP to Thailand: quick answers.

Written by the HIV PEP Pattaya team, based on BHIVA/BASHH and WHO guidance. Last updated 29 September 2026.

How long before travel should I start PrEP?

About three weeks before you fly covers all current advice for anal and vaginal sex. A double starting dose 2 to 24 hours before sex also works under updated UK guidance.

Can I bring PrEP into Thailand?

Yes. Thai embassy guidance allows up to 30 days of a personal prescription medicine, in its original labelled packs with a prescription or doctor’s letter.

Can I buy PrEP in Thailand as a tourist?

Yes, from a doctor after an HIV test and a few safety checks. Tablets sold without a test are best avoided, because PrEP is only safe if you are HIV-negative.

What if I forget PrEP on holiday?

If you are less than 12 hours late, take it now; if more, skip that dose and continue as normal. If you missed several days and had condomless sex, call, LINE or WhatsApp us about PEP within 72 hours.

Can I drink alcohol while taking PrEP?

Alcohol does not stop PrEP working. The main risk is forgetting doses, so link your tablet to a fixed part of your day.
